People love to give advice to others – even if they don’t usually follow it themselves. So – before giving advice to others, you need to understand yourself better – how to give good advice. Remember – Irrational advice is not effective.
Useful Ways to Advice Others:
Ask Questions to Understand Other’s Expectations: Questions clarify what the other wants from you. You may ask – “What’s going on?” or “How are you feeling?”. He should not be forced to speak to encourage. Listen First to Him/Her: Let his/her express her emotions and issues. Don’t interrupt until he finishes. Analyze Possible Solutions: Continue the conversation to evaluate the merits and wisdom of different ideas. Ask before you answer. Let him be a smart person. Provide Options – not Solutions: Don’t force the solution on him as it stalls the conversation. Your display of superiority frustrates him. So, offer a few options without forcing your choice. Remember that the best solution will work for her, not yours. Consideration of the Situation: Advising others – Advising on spiritual and modern matters requires a balance between productive and defensive behavior.
